Young Windsurfer of the Year 2017 Toby Cave
Every year, the LWA Committee chooses one of our young sailors who has participated in LWA Events, shown talent, determination and sportsmanship to be awarded in recognition of their windsurfing achievements.
They are presented with a trophy and a cheque for £200 with the intention of encouraging them to further success.
Past winners have included such names as Bryony Shaw, the UK Ladies Windsurfing Bronze Medallist at the Beijing Olympics, Keith Atkinson, winner of many Formula titles both National and International, and Dan Simpson, who blazed a trail across the World Formula Youth rankings.
So there is a great deal to live up to. For 2017 the winner is Toby Cave who received a cheque for £200 and the trophy from the hands of LWA Cerry Hastings. Our congratulations to Toby and we wish him a successful and enjoyable year’s windsurfing in 2018.
I have been windsurfing for 8 years now, beginning on Techno kit. Being in zone squad developed my racing and all round windsurfing skills, which I could practise in UKWA and LWA events.
After Techno I spent a couple of years training and racing RS:X 8.5 until I tried competing on a Raceboard at the 2016 European Championships. I really enjoyed competing and spending time with such great people. This very quickly convinced me to change from RS:X to Raceboard permanently. Coaching from Mark Kay at the start of this year, really helped me to progress on Raceboard and prepared me for a year of very competitive racing courtesy of UKWA and LWA.
At this year's European Championships at Lake Balaton, Hungary, I achieved 2nd Raceboard Youth. (2017)
I am extremely grateful to the LWA for organising another year of entertaining and competitive racing and honoured to be awarded the 2017 Colin Flint Youth Windsurfer of the Year and I thank the Flint family for continuing the tradition started by Colin, who is sadly missed by all.
