Burghfield SC Report

Burghfield produced yet another challenging day's sailing, the wind varying from five or six knots up to around twelve, with the occasional unforeseen gust! The rain which had been around in the early morning mercifully held off and moved away eastwards. Race Officer Tony Chandler set us a large X course, starting down near the motorway with a starboard hand windward mark off to the right of the clubhouse, a close reach to mark no. 1 right in front of the club, then a long run/broad reach back to the bottom of the lake, with a reach across to the finish line.

22 sailors took to the water, including two Div II boards in the hands of Peter Murray and Florent Lambert. Young sailors in the shape of Toby Cave, Julian Tait and Galahad Wisbey were particularly in evidence, helping the Div IIs to keep Rob Kent honest at the sharp end of the fleet. Race One finished with Rob in first place, with Toby and Julian ahead of Peter.

Race Two ended with Julian taking second place to Rob, Annette Kent in third and Toby in fourth, Peter having slipped back to eighth.

In Race Three it was Julian's turn to drop a few places, Toby again took second behind Rob and Galahad nailed third, his best result of the day. Commiserations to Chris Gibson, who was pumping hard down the run when his mast just snapped in two and he eventually made it back to the clubhouse by using the remains as a paddle.

In the last race the order after the windward mark was Rob, followed by Florent and Peter, however they gradually faded back as the wind increased and Annette crossed the line second behind Rob, with Julian in third.

Rob won the day with his four bullets, Toby and Julian finished on 8 points each with the honours going to Toby, Annette had a great day to finish fourth overall. Nick Kidd and Andy Lacy filled places five and six, just to show that the old guys can still hack it, and Peter Murray was just one point behind Andy in seventh. Congratulations go to Jozef Bardoczy for battling round the course to complete all the races and also to Julian's sister Laura who did likewise on her Techno.
