King George Summer Series Final

LWA Summer Series Event 7: King George SC: Sat 23 Oct 2021:

A welcome return to King George after a long absence, with 15 sailors turning up to race it provided a sharp contrast to the olden days when 120 or so competed fiercely to find somewhere to rig up!

The weather was benign, however, although for Race One the wind had not yet reached the promised 6 knots or so. Rob Kent started as he meant to continue with a first place, with Peter Murray on his Div II in second, Lewis Barnes in third and Phil Jackson, on another Div II in fourth. In fact it proved to be an excellent day’s racing for these Div II merchants. Young Guy Gibson, with a 7.5 sail on an IMCO, took 11th place ahead of 4 sailors using potentially much faster gear!

The wind tickled up a little for Race Two, Lewis got into his stride and took first place ahead of Rob and Emily Kent, with Peter in fourth. As we adjourned for lunch hopes were high for a few extra knots in the afternoon.

Our expectations were fulfilled, but as the wind had shifted considerably, the Race Officer decided on a starboard-hand course, which produced the usual problems when boards have to turn to the right across boards on starboard to make the windward mark.

Nevertheless, the improved windspeed made for a most enjoyable race, which was won by Rob, ahead of Pete and Phil, with Chris Gibson in 4th, having his best race of the day.

Race 4 proved to be even more enjoyable, not quite back straps blasting, but certainly good upwind railing conditions. Rob and Peter once again filled the first two slots, with Nick Kidd beating Phil to the line for third place.

The final results showed what a great day it had been for the Div IIs, with Peter and Phil taking 2nd and 3rd overall behind Rob. Emily also had a good day, finishing 8 points ahead of mum!

RESULTS:

1: Rob Kent (also 1st Light & 1st Grand Master) 2: Peter Murray (also 1st Div II) 3: Phil Jackson (also 2nd Div II) 4: Nick Kidd (also 1st Supervet) 5: Emily Kent (also 1st Lady) 13: Guy Gibson - 1st 7.8
