Queen Mary Quivers

LWA Icebreaker 2017 Event Two Queen Mary SC Sat 18 Nov:

A temperature something like 6 degrees may have put some of our sailors off but we still had a turnout of 20, making five teams in all. Queen Mary water level was down, meaning we had to negotiate the mussel beds on the way down to the water's edge, then plunge into 18 inches of silt! However the wind was not as affected as at our recent Datchet event because the side of the reservoir were not as high here at QM.

There was a possibility of a few gusts but these did not materialise so it was a light wind event, with most of the wind around the 8 knot mark.

Lewis Barnes (Hot Shots) seemed determined to stamp his mark all over the event and started off well by winning Race One, ahead of Rob Kent (Team Kent) and fellow Hot Shot, Toby Cave, in third.

Race Two found Lewis and Rob at the top, followed by Nick Kidd (Farmoor Flyers) and Annette Kent (Team Kent) with her best result of the day, having been first round the windward mark.

After a fairly swift lunch we were back out on the water but annoyingly the wind had dropped a little. Lewis once again stormed to the front, this time with Toby in second place and Bob Ingram (LWA) in third, his best result of the day, in third, pushing Rob down into fourth.

Having carded three bullets (and because his mum had to take his board back home!) Lewis did not sail the last race, which was won by a delighted Alan Jackson (LWA) ahead of Rob and Toby.

Team Results were as follows:

1: Farmoor Flyers: 72

2: Team Kent: 73

3: Hot Shots: 86

4: LWA: 106

5: Seavets: 197

Individual Results:

1: Lewis Barnes 3

2: Rob Kent 6

3: Toby Cave 8

This means that our Oxford event next Sat will be providing a nail-biting finish to this year's Icebreaker, with the teams positioned as follows after two events:

Team Kent 136

Hot Shots: 143

Farmoor Flyers 166

LWA: 250

Seavets: 304

The LWA are not likely to make much of an impression of the top three, but at the front there is everything to play for - and the Farmoor Flyers are on home ground!

In the Individual Results, Lewis Barnes has a nose ahead on 9 points, followed by Rob Kent on 12 and Toby Cave on 13, after which there is a gap until Nick Kidd on 26.
