Gentle Bewl
LWA Summer Series Event 6 Bewl Valley Sat 21 Sep 2019
What a beautiful day, sunshine, wind and a great expanse of water!
Fifteen sailors turned out to race, including two newcomers, Paul Fey and Denis Gordo. The wind was south-easterly, allegedly 12 gusting 18, but most of the time it stayed well under 10 knots, and sometimes a long way below 12 knots. The wind was shifting quite significantly and some good distance was made up by those who spotted the opportunities.
Our old friend from Bewl, Tony Purkis, was Race Officer who laid a medium sized course with the windward mark in the middle of the lake. The leeward mark was tucked round the corner of one of the headlands which sometimes caused problems for those unlucky sailors who were caught in the lee of the land.
Race One found Lewis Barnes first across the line with Rob Kent in second, one place ahead of his daughter Rebecca with Any Lacy in 4th. Rob turned the table in Race Two however, and Lewis filled second place ahead of Andy Gibson. Annette Kent had her best result of the day in 4th.
The wind dropped during lunch and we feared for the next two races, however it did pick up again as we started racing. Lewis made no mistakes for the rest of the afternoon and finished Race Three ahead of Rob, who treated us to a nail-biting photo fish which saw him pip Andy Gibson on the line for second place. Andy Lacy collected another fourth.
In Race Four Lewis once again carded a bullet with Rob behind him and Rebecca filling third ahead of Nick Kidd.
